On Wednesday 27th May, Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation, held a youth five-a-side tournament at the Wembley Powerleague to mark the end of their second successive ‘Season of Action’. The Wembley National Stadium Trust was proud to provide funding of £5,000 towards the costs of hosting the event.
The day was a celebration of diversity in Brent and featured tournaments for both boys and girls. The football was of an extremely high quality, with some incredibly close-fought matched all played in the correct spirit. The girls’ tournament was won by Limehouse Girls, whilst Total Football Academy took the boys’ honours. All those taking part were awarded medals to reward their participation, with trophies for the winning teams as well as the boy and girl players of the tournament.
Alongside the competitive action, Queens Park Rangers in the Community Trust ran a training session and practice match for disabled players whilst football freestyler Dan Magness entertained the audience with his skills and tricks during breaks in the action.
Over 1.4 million people attended a ‘Season of Action’ fixture this season where the focus of clubs has been to support the work that football’s equality and diversity organisation does on a daily basis to tackle all forms of discrimination at all levels of the game.
Cory Hendricks-Jackman, Kick It Out’s Grassroots Football Development Officer said: “Our ‘Season of Action’ has seen an increase of over 300,000 people seeing professional clubs supporting the work of Kick It Out on a designated matchday this year, with these events often having a lasting impact with young people.”
